The source of the Elbe represents one of the most fundamental natural phenomena of the Czech part of the Giant Mountains. This symbolic beginning of one of Europe's largest rivers is located on the Elbe meadow at an altitude of 1,387 m above sea level. The actual source, hidden in bogs, is inaccessible to the public for reasons of nature protection, which is why a stone ring symbolizing the source of the Elbe was built here. The attraction of the place is enhanced by a stone wall with colorful symbols of the 26 important cities through which the river flows on its way to the sea. Thanks to its uniqueness and beautiful surroundings, the Elbe spring is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the Giant Mountains.

On foot from Špindlerův Mlýn

From the city center (Bílý most), follow the red tourist trail (Vodárenská cesta) through Horní Mísečky, Masarykova silnice, past Vrbatova bouda, Pančavský waterfall, several hidden viewpoints, Labská bouda, until you reach Prameni Labe (9 km).

You can climb the first elevation by the Medvědín cable car, from the top station follow the red sign in the direction of Šmídova vyhlídka, Vrbatova bouda, Pančavský waterfall, Labská bouda (6.5 km) until you reach Pramni Labe.

On foot through the Elbe mine

The blue tourist sign will lead you through the Elbe Mine, along the meandering Elbe (10 km) directly to the spring.

By bus and on foot

By bus from Horní Míseček , which will help you overcome the first elevation gain to Vrbatová bouda. Then you continue on foot following the red tourist sign along the ridge above the Labský dol directly to Prameni Labe.

If you set out with a pram, bicycle or wheelchair, from Vrbatova bouda you continue along the upper tourist path to the junction U čty pánů, Labská bouda, from there it is only 1 km to Prameni Elbe.

Our tip!

If you want to experience and see everything, we recommend the route from Špindlerův bouda, the Krkonoše Ridge, or the Czech-Polish Friendship Route to Pramni Labe. Amazing dramatic views of the Czech and Polish Giant Mountains will be your reward.
