The Devil's Grate is not only a natural gem, but also a technical unique that hides the history and construction art of our ancestors with minimal technical means. This 1.2 km educational trail takes you through a place where nature and man fought together in the past against devastating floods. While walking through the Devil's Groove, you will discover an exceptionally well-preserved masonry work whose history dates back more than 100 years. Extensive embankment works were carried out here after a series of devastating floods at the end of the 19th century, which affected the entire Elbe, Jizera and Úpa basins. On the trail, you will come across 43 transverse and 194 longitudinal stone walling structures, the uniqueness of which is also enhanced by the fact that approximately half of the stone used was obtained from a quarry established above the mouth of the Červené brook.
How to get there?
- The educational trail starts 200 meters above Bouda u Bílé Labe.
- Against the current of the Devil's channel, you will set off on a path that will take you to the remains of the former forge.
- To return, you can use the same route or connect to the yellow tourist trail, Hollmann's path, about 150 meters below the forge.
- After 1.3 km, Hollmann's path will take you (yellow tourist sign) to the hotel Erlebachova bouda, where you can board the bus. You can also travel in the opposite direction.
